Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek: A Moderate Trek for Novices with Stunning Views
The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is a moderate trek that offers a perfect balance of adventure and accessibility, making it ideal for novice trekkers. Located in the stunning Annapurna region, this trek allows you to experience breathtaking mountain views, close-up vistas of the Annapurna and Machapuchare ranges, and the tranquility of less-crowded trails. Unlike the more popular treks like Annapurna Base Camp or Ghorepani Poon Hill, Mardi Himal Trek offers a peaceful alternative with awe-inspiring landscapes.
Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek Highlights
This trek is considered moderately difficult, suitable for trekkers with basic fitness levels. With an average daily hike of 6 kilometers, the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 meters) is the highest point on the trek, offering magnificent panoramic views of the Annapurna I, Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and the iconic Machapuchare (Fishtail) peak. The route takes you through lush forests, past cascading waterfalls, and remote villages where you can experience the culture of the Gurung and Magar communities. The trek is ideal for those seeking an adventure with manageable difficulty and stunning rewards.
The Mardi Himal Trek remains a hidden gem, with far fewer trekkers than the more crowded Annapurna trails. This makes it an excellent choice for those looking for a more secluded and serene trekking experience. Despite gaining popularity since its discovery in 2012, the trek offers peace and solitude, making it an appealing choice for those who want to escape the busier trekking routes in Nepal.
At 49 kilometers, the Mardi Himal Trek is relatively short compared to other high-altitude treks, and its moderate difficulty makes it an excellent choice for novice trekkers. The trek is accessible, with gradual ascents and scenic vistas, offering an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Himalayas.
The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is the perfect option for those looking for a moderate, less-crowded trek with stunning views and an authentic Himalayan experience.
The best time to trek Mardi Himal is during the spring season (March to May), when the weather is mild and the trails are adorned with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers. During this time, the temperatures are comfortable, reaching up to 20°C during the day, with cooler mornings and evenings. This season provides the perfect conditions for trekking, with clear skies and stunning mountain views, especially at sunrise and sunset.
The best time for the Mardi Himal Trek depends on the individual. The four seasons in Nepal provide people with different trekking experiences in each season. The weather is one of the most important factors that influences the trekking experience, and it is highly affected by the altitude.
The favorable weather and risk-free trekking trails, blushing alongside thriving rhododendron and other wildflowers, plus the stunning mountain views, make spring one of the best times for the Mardi Himal Base CampTrek. The trekking trails will be more alluring and pleasant with the fragrance of blossoming flowers.
The temperature and weather of the Mardi Himal Trek during Spring are pleasant, with warm days where the temperature might hike up to 20 degrees centigrade. The early mornings, evenings, and nights can get cold, but they are not unbearable.
The hotels and lodges might get preoccupied as many people opt for trekking during this time of year for a worthy trekking experience.
Day | Itinerary | Total Distance | Estimated Time | Max Altitude |
---|---|---|---|---|
Day 1 | Kathmandu to Pokhara & drive to Kande & trek to Pothana | 230 KM | 4 hours | 1510 m |
Day 2 | Pothana to Forest Camp Trek | 23 KM | 5-6 hours | 2500 m |
Day 3 | Forest Camp to Low Camp Trek | 8 KM | 3-4 hours | 3000 m |
Day 4 | Low Camp to High Camp Trek | 8.5 KM | 5-6 hours | 3580 m |
Day 5 | High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp and trek back to High Camp | 18 KM | 7 hours | 3580 m |
Day 6 | High Camp to Sidhing | 12 KM | 7 hours | 1700 m |
Day 7 | Sidhing to Lumre & drive to Pokhara | 22.5 KM | 5-6 hours | 900 m |
Day 8 | Pokhara to Kathmandu | 200 KM | 6-7 hours | 1350 m |
From the above distance calculation, it is clear that the total distance covered during the 08-day Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek is 535 kilometers. However, the total distance traveled for proper hiking on days 6 and a half is 75 kilometers of proper hiking for an average of 6-7 hours a day. The overall distance covered for the 6 and a half days of hiking was 75 kilometers, which required an average of 5-6 hours per day of hiking.
The heavy rainfalls during the summer and monsoon seasons result in slippery trekking routes, making them more accident-prone. Making matters worse, the heavy rain and clouds might cause poor visibility, further degrading your trekking experience.
With rainfall comes the leech problem. Even though the rainfall is lighter at higher altitudes, the leeches in the forest and the muddy trails make this one of the off-seasons for Mardi Himal Trek.
The diurnal temperature can get as high as 25 degrees on a sunny day, even as you gain elevation. The nighttime temperature ranges between 5 and 10 degrees.
Another best season to trek in Mardi Himal Trek or any other low as well as high altitude trek in Nepal. The weather is appropriate, with the diurnal temperature going as high as 20 degrees centigrade and the nighttime temperature going as low as 4 degrees centigrade. During late November, the weather might be a bit colder.
The clear blue sky and vivid mountain panoramas are the next highlight of the autumn months. Furthermore, the trekking trails are safe. However, you won’t get the trekking experience of trekking beside a glowing forest during this season.
Be careful and book early, as the hotels, lodges, and guest houses are more likely to be busy this time of year.
The winter season has the ability to be difficult for any high-altitude trek. The views during Winter season are marvelous if you can sustain the weather.
The diurnal temperature at higher altitudes on the Mardi Himal Trek might average between 5 and 12 degrees. The nights will be much tougher as the temperature drops to about -5 degrees centigrade.
The heavy snowfall and biting cold might make the trekking experience difficult. However, since the Mardi Himal Trek is not located at such a high altitude as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the challenges are far less.
An experienced, solitude-loving trekker might find December and the rest of this season quite appealing in terms of trekking experiences.
