Introduction About Makalu Base Camp Trek
The Makalu Base Camp Trek leads you to the foot of Mt. Makalu (8,463 m), the fifth-highest mountain on Earth. You walk through Makalu Barun National Park, past Rai and Sherpa villages, over three high passes, and up the Barun Valley to base camp at 4,870 m. It is one of Nepal's quietest and wildest treks, with no crowds and big views of Makalu, Chamlang, Baruntse, and Kanchenjunga.
That remoteness also means you need to plan well. These tips come from the guides at Team Ram Adventure, who lead this trek. Below the tips, you will also find the best season, permits, difficulty, and the full itinerary.
Is the Makalu Base Camp Trek Good for a First-Time Trekker?
It can be, if you are fit and flexible. The trek is rated moderate to challenging: you walk 4 to 6 hours a day, climb to about 4,870 m, and spend several days far from roads and towns. Our guides suggest it for trekkers who have already hiked in Nepal or who can comfortably walk 6 to 7 hours a day. If this is your first big trek, train well and allow extra days for weather and road delays. See the full Makalu Base Camp Trek page for details.
12 Makalu Base Camp Trek Tips for First-Time Trekkers
1. Train for Long, Hilly Days
Start 8 to 12 weeks ahead with hiking, stair climbing, running, or cycling, and add leg strength work. Once a week, do a long hike with a loaded backpack. The trail goes up and down all day, so stamina and strong knees matter more than speed.
2. Choose the Right Season
Autumn and spring give the most reliable weather. Spring also brings rhododendron blossoms in March and April. See the season guide below.
3. Build In Buffer Days
Flights to Tumlingtar can be delayed, and the jeep road to Num can be muddy or blocked, especially in early October. Our plan allows two days to reach Num if needed. Do not book tight onward flights, and keep a few spare days at the end of your trip.
4. Take Acclimatization Seriously
You reach 3,500 m at Khongma on day 7. If you feel unwell, our guides add an extra night there and a short day hike. Climb slowly, drink plenty of water, and tell your guide early about headaches, nausea, or poor sleep. If you plan to carry altitude medication, talk to your doctor first.
5. Prepare for Three Passes
After Khongma you cross Gongar La (3,600 m), Shipton La (4,170 m), and Keke La (4,125 m), then descend to Dobato. The climbs are steady rather than technical, so keep a slow rhythm and take breaks. Poles help on the long descents.
6. Take Care on the Landslide Section
On the way to Yangle Kharka, the trail crosses a rocky landslide area for about an hour. Rocks can fall, so stay alert, keep moving, and follow your guide's pace.
7. Pack for Both Warm Forests and Cold Nights
Bring thermal layers, a fleece, a down jacket, a waterproof shell, warm gloves, and a hat. You will need a four-season sleeping bag, because some nights are in tents. Boots must be waterproof and well broken in.
8. Carry a Light Day Pack
Porters carry your duffel bag, and you carry only a small daypack with water, snacks, a rain layer, and camera. Keep it around 10 to 15 liters so you stay comfortable on long days.
9. Expect Simple Food and Lodging
Accommodation is a mix of teahouses and tented camp, depending on the village and season. Meals are local and simple, and our team brings some food provisions that are hard to buy on the trail. Pack a few snacks, and a power bank, since charging can be limited.
10. Bring Cash
There are no ATMs along the route. Carry enough Nepali rupees from Kathmandu for drinks, snacks, and tips.
11. Get the Right Insurance
Choose travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation. This is not included in the package, so check the policy wording before you buy. Some travelers also climb to 5,500 m toward Advance Base Camp, so confirm your cover reaches that height.
12. Respect the Wilderness
Makalu Barun is a protected national park. Carry out your rubbish, use biodegradable toiletries, and respect local Rai and Sherpa customs along the way.
Best Season for the Makalu Base Camp Trek
- Spring (March to May): Blooming rhododendron forests, clear mountain views, and milder temperatures.
- Autumn (September to December): Stable weather and sharp views, with drier trails from late October.
- Winter (December to February): Cold, with snow possible near the high passes.
- Monsoon (June to August): Rain, leeches, and landslide risk on the road and trail.
Our guides recommend spring and autumn for most trekkers. You can see current departure options on the trip page.
Makalu Base Camp Trek Permits
You need a Makalu Barun National Park permit, which is registered at the checkpoint in Seduwa, plus other trek permits and local fees. Team Ram Adventure arranges all permits and trek logistics for you, and they are included in the package price. You only need to bring your passport, passport photos, and insurance details. Permit fees change, so ask us for current figures when you book.
How Difficult Is the Makalu Base Camp Trek?
It is moderate to challenging.
- Hard: Remote trails, long up-and-down days, three passes, a landslide section, and camping or basic lodging at higher camps.
- Manageable: The climbs are steady, there is no technical terrain, and the plan has flexible rest days and weather buffers.
- Your edge: Fitness, a flexible schedule, and good gear matter more than previous trekking experience.
